Interpreters and translators enable the cross-cultural communication necessary in today's society by converting one language into another. However, these language specialists do more than simply translate words; they relay concepts and ideas between languages. They must thoroughly understand the subject matter in which they work in order to accurately convert information from one language, known as the source language, into another, the target language.
Effective interpretation in health, mental health and human services extends beyond just bilingualism. In order to ensure accurate and complete communication between patients and providers, the interpreter must recognize and apply the role, ethics and skills of interpretation. This program will enable you to provide linguistically and culturally appropriate interpretation services.
Level I Learning Outcomes:
The Role of the Interpreter
Interpreter's Code of Ethics
Professional Development for Interpreters
The Skill of Interpreting
Cultural Competency
Legal Issues involved with Interpreting
Role-playing and guided practice sessions are provided.
MUST BE BILINGUAL IN ENGLISH & ANY OTHER LANGUAGE, WRITTEN AND SPOKEN.
Levels I, III, and IV are non-language specific (must be blilingual in English and any other language).
Level II is language specific (must be bilingual in English and Spanish).
NOTE: Level I, II, and III courses may be taken in any order. Level IV is required before sitting for the national certification exam. This course meets the training requirements for both The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters and The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters.
