Process improvement teams have been sucessfully using process maps, sometimes referred to as flow charts, to better understand their processes. Process maps are a valuebale tool and a critical element of a process' documentation and initial analysis.
We begin by identifying the process flow and then understanding the customers' needs. Next we begin to identify sources of waste and look at activities as "value added." Then we use Value Stream Maps to help us see what is needed by customers, at the rate needed by customers, when needed by cumstomers that allow for development of people. Keep in mind that customers may be the next process or operation in the value stream or the external customer.
