The profession of public safety dispatching is exciting, challenging and rewarding.
The requirements for public safety dispatching jobs vary greatly by agency and area of the country. This course will cover the basics to get a person started in the field of dispatching. This course will conclude with a 12 hour mentor rotation with a dispatcher.
A dispatcher may be required to perform one or all of the following tasks:
* Take telephone calls from the public, both for emergency and non-emergency incidents, and/or administrative units of the agency
* Dispatch units to incidents, both emergency and non-emergency
* Track the status of units, vehicles and equipment
* Greet citizens who come to the front counter
* Process prisoners in the jail or lock-up
* Perform clerical work related to incident reports and officer activity
Pay rates for dispatchers vary greatly. Call takers might start at $14,000/year while supervisors may earn up to $40,000/year.

* Customer service
* Stress and stress management
* Type minimum of 35 wpm.
* Have a high school diploma or GED.
* Customer service oriented, organizational skills and ability to multi-task a must.
* Background check needed.
* Sign a Statement of Understanding.
* CPR class included.

MUST have background check done before class starts. Front desk of the Buck Mickel Center has the form. Required TextS: 911 Emergency Communications Manual, 4th edition, available at Greenville Technical College bookstore, approximate cost $85 AND BLS Provider Manual, 2015 Edition, approximate cost $16.
Class meets Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
CPR class included. Student must purchase a BLS Healthcare Provider book at the GTC bookstore to bring to class (approximate cost $16) and read the book before class.
Observation mentor rotations with a dispatcher will be scheduled with students individually.
