The purpose of this course is to provide knowledge and skills necessary to properly identify, maintain and manage hazardous waste generated on college campuses and in university laboratories. This training will aid school employees in maintaining federal, state and local compliance regulations applicable to waste identification, storage and disposal.
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
· Explain the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976 and give examples of how this regulation applies to the daily operation and safety of laboratory practices.
· Describe how the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control (DHEC) regulations for hazardous waste impact the overall safety of the faculty, students and the local community.
· Properly manage laboratory hazardous waste material in accordance with federal and state regulatory requirements by demonstrating the ability to:
o Correctly identify hazardous waste
o Prepare hazardous waste for proper disposal
o Demonstrate proper recordkeeping for hazardous waste management including tracking waste generation and disposal, reporting practices for spills, and training documentation.
