Ophthalmic Medical Assistant - Eye Care Training

Assist in the effort to prevent, detect, diagnose and manage conditions that can interfere with one of our most precious senses: sight. The Ophthalmic Medical Assistant holds an important, responsible position, providing eye doctors with the initial evaluation of the patient. This exciting career will prepare you in initiating the patient exam, measuring and recording vital status, and performing diagnostic procedures. They are valuable members of the eye care team. This program has been designed by local eye doctors to meet area needs.



Included in the course are 90 hours devoted to a core curriculum consisting of classroom work with practical laboratories and 80 hours of clinical experience. The two-week clinical of actual supervised hands-on practice in affiliated ophthalmic offices gives added value to this course! Students will be supervised but are expected to become members of the patient care team.

Anticipated clinical externship dates are January 3, 2022 to January 14, 2022 - 8:00am to 5:00pm , Monday through Friday

* Basic computer skills

* Knowledge of patient services

* Basic skills and lensometry

* Basic tonometry

* Instrument maintenance

* General medical background



Certification:

Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a Greenville Technical College certificate as an Ophthalmic Assistant. Graduates from the program are encouraged to take the certification exam to become Certified Ophthalmic Assistants.



Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED.

Clinical dates: January 3, 2022 through January 14, 2022 during office hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Textbook: Ophthalmic Medical Assisting (AAO 6th Edition), available at Greenville Technical College Bookstore, approximate cost $223.00 MUST call 250-8800 to register and pay for required Pre Clinical Orientation online learning modules. Students are required to complete the following steps for placement in the clinical externship. Completion of a Health Physical, Proof of Immunizations, 2 STEP PPD - TB tesing, criminal background check and completion of online modules Pre- Clinical Orientation. These requirements are due to the program manager by September 13, 2021. Final Exam scheduled for December 13, 2021 at 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Location TBD. Uniform: Black solid scrubs and white, closed toe, non skid shoes.
