This course provides a foundation for teaching and facilitating American Heart Association courses. Participants must complete the online AHA Instructor Essentials prior to attending the classroom session (additional fees apply). The online portion is a prerequisite for all new instructor candidates and for instructors adding another discipline to their teaching credentials. It can be accessed from the AHA Instructor Network at www.ahainstructornetwork.org. First time users will need to register in order to access the online training.
Students must provide documentation of current provider status and documentation that they have been accepted for alignment with an AHA Training Center in order to attend the classroom session.
REGISTRATION deadline is one week prior to class.
REQUIRED MATERIALS TO BRING TO CLASS: You will need to purchase the MOST CURRENT EDITION Instructor Manual and Provider book for each discipline you plan to teach. You will also need to bring your current provider card and a photo ID to class. Instructor manuals may be purchased at the GTC Bookstore (BLS Instructor Manual ~$50 and/or Heartsaver and Family & Friends Instructor Manual ~$75).
Here is a summary of the qualifications for becoming an instructor:
PRIOR TO REGISTERING FOR CLASS:
1. Call 864-250-8092 to meet with Training Center Coordinator
2. Make arrangements for alignment with an AHA Training Center (Additional fee may apply)
3. Be sure that you have a current AHA CPR certification card in the discipline you wish to teach
FOR CLASS, You will need to:
4. Obtain a copy of the CURRENT instructor manual and provider book for the course(s) you plan to teach
5. Complete the Instructor Essentials online portion, and forward to Training Center Coordinator.
TO PASS THE CLASS:
1. You must know CPR!
2. Make a score of at least 92 on the Healthcare Provider Test
3. Successfully complete the skill checkoffs
4. Pass the written Instructor examination
5. Teach a mini-topic assigned to you during the class
As a final step, before teaching a class on your own, you must be monitored by your Training Center Faculty!
