Certified Medical Insurance Specialist (CMIS)

Coding expertise is the foundation. But if you want to get paid, then you'll need to know the rules. PMI gives you the full reimbursement picture. This certification program explores the current landscape of third party reimbursement and offers tips, tools, and techniques to help you expedite claims and receive correct reimbursement. Help your physician secure timely, correct and consistent reimbursement and protect the financial interest of the practice. Experienced medical office professionals with exceptional coding, reimbursement and claims management skills (at least a year of experience) are eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Insurance Specialist (CMIS) exam. Practice Management Institute has helped raise the bar of knowledge with its CMIS credential, designed to demonstrate outstanding skill in outpatient claims and reimbursement.
Students will need the following current edition reference books to complete this course: CPT $117.00, HCPCS $85.50. ICD-10 $86.75, and a medical dictionary.
To maintain your CMIS certification, you must earn a minimum of 12 CEU hours per year and pay an annual recertification fee of $75. Certification expires December 31 of the following calendar year from which you earn your certification. This means that if you earned your certification in March 2004, your certification will expire December 31, 2005.
The Certified Medical Insurance Specialist (CMIS)® program is approved for up to 20
CEUs for PMI Certified Professionals (CMC/CMOM/CMCO). All others seeking CEUs
should verify credit guidelines with their organization prior to enrollment.
Instructional materials, and exam included in fee.
Student needs to bring a current ICD-9 CM Volume I & II, current CPT manual, and a medical dictionary to class
(a HCPCS manual is recommended but not required).
Test will be given 10/06 from 2:00 PM to 8 PM, BMC Room 135.
