Medical Assistant IV: Laboratory

Course Description

Medical Assistant Section IV: Laboratory is the final section of the Medical Assistant Program. Students are instructed in basic laboratory skills used in an ambulatory care setting. Upon completion of the Laboratory curriculum, students are placed in a mandatory 120 hour clinical practicum experience. This practicum is unpaid, and requires M-F daytime hours for three weeks. Classes are held at the Buck Mickel Center of Greenville Technical College. Topics Include:
* Laboratory Safety
* Specimen Collection and Preparation
* Venipuncture Techniques
* CLIA Waived Laboratory Procedures: Urinalysis, Chemistry, Hematology
* Practical Knowledge of Microbiology
PREREQUISITES: Successfully complete Medical Assistant I, II, and III.

Upon successful completion of all four sections of the Medical Assistant Program, students are eligible to take the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) Certification Examination . This course includes a Medical Assistant Certification Review class after students complete their practicum experience.
