Course Description

Orthopedics is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorders, and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. You will have the opportunity to use some code designations that may be new or unfamiliar, learn more about the details of the many diagnoses and procedures available in the classification systems, and gain practical knowledge of how to handle some difficult orthopedic classification issues.

OBJECTIVES:
--Gain a proper application of coding rules and conventions as they apply to orthopedics.
--Demonstrate knowledge of the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal tissues by always referencing the proper body system in CPT and ICD-10-CM.
--Explain the most common diseases, disorders, and injuries of the musculoskeletal system and be able to differentiate between similar conditions with different codes.
--Learn to accurately and completely classify diagnoses and procedures applicable to orthopedics without over coding or under coding the case.
