The Unit Secretary is an essential element in the running of a hospital station unit. Learn the roles and duties of one of the most important positions on the nursing unit. This 159-hour certificate program offers complete coverage of health unit coordinating from medical terminology and greeting new patients to transcribing physician orders. Also covered is basic computer skills, anatomy, interpersonal skills and working with patients.

--Dealing with family members and visitors
CLINICAL: After completion of the course, you will attend an 80-hour clinical externship and work one-on-one with a unit secretary. This clinical component provides you with an opportunity to utilize your new skills and, at the same time, provides the hospital an opportunity to evaluate you as potential employee.

Prerequisites to become a Unit Secretary student:
* Must be at least 18 years of age
* Possess a high school diploma or GED
* Must sign Statement of Understanding before registering
* Must have SLED criminal background check
* Present negative two-step TB test and immunization record
Required courses: HIPAA, OSHA, Pre-Clinical and CPR
NOTE: MUST ALSO REGISTER FOR UNIT SECRETARY CLINICAL - BOC840.
Upon completion, students are qualified to sit for the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators certification.
Student will receive log-on instructions by email within 2-3 business days after registering.

NOTE: The 80-hour clinical is required for the Unit Secretary program; the clinical fee $55 is NOT included in the course registration fee. If you require the -online portion only-, you must notify the program manager in writing within 90 days after completing the online course.
Requirements for clinical include: additional online courses (HIPAA, OSHA, Preclinical Orientation), immunization record or titers, current criminal background check, negative two-step TB test, flu shot, CPR for Healthcare Providers, and must pay the registration fee (BOC840), etc.
IMPORTANT: You must speak with Amy Turner, (864)250-8518, firstname.lastname@example.org, to review and sign the statement of understanding prior to beginning the program. The Unit Secretary clinical must be COMPLETED withing 6 months of completion of the online portion.
